How do you know when you have lost enough weight?

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

I have lost 70 lbs and was an 18 and now a 6. I feel like I keep trying to lose weight but my body has just stopped. I am 5′4 and 138 lbs. Is that a healthy weight or do I need to lose more. I have been stuck at this weight for about 6 months. I eat healthy and have really stepped up my exercise. I havent lost a pound.

Contrary to a prior reply, your body won’t plateau for as long as 6 months. It appears you may have reached the weight which is what it should be for the size of your frame. I have a, very, small frame (my wrist is a bit less than 5-3/4 inches), am 5′4", 112, 36 bust – it’s the wrist measurement which determines the definition of your frame. If your wrist measures 6-1/2", you have a large frame. I have a friend from Holland who is 5′5" – her wrist is 6-3/4" and she weighs 142-144 … she isn’t overweight. As a size 6, assume your bust measurement is about 36 – 37 which is perfect for your height – you couldn’t, possibly, look fat so think you should keep doing what you’re doing to stay healthy and fit! One can become addicted to dieting and lose perspective as to what is a suitable weight – remember that men prefer curves to bones. The fact that you’ve lost so much weight is terrific … if you can maintain for 2 – 3 years it’s, very, unlikely, you’ll have a weight problem again.

The Secret to Finding the Best Weight Loss Diet

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Visit any discussion forum on the internet for those wanting to lose weight, and you will find an astonishing number of people searching for which the “best” diet is to lose weight. Generally they also want to lose it quickly. That’s natural and normal.

However the answers these people get are both very muddling and very revealing.

How come?

Well the thing you will find is that nobody agrees with one another. One person will have lost a huge amount of weight on Weight Watchers, another will swear by Rosemary Connelly. And so on. There may be dozens of “best” diets recommended.

And there’s a reason for that – there *is* no best diet – just the best diet *for you*.

It’s vitally important to understand that fact, so please reread the last line to burn it into your head.

Let’s be honest – we all know that basically to lose weight we need to burn fewer calories than we consume. By reducing our calorific intake and/or exercising more we will achieve that.

In theory, therefore, you could create your own diet tonight and it would work and help you lose weight.

Perhaps you’d eat just salads and run for 30 minutes 3 times a week.

That would work, wouldn’t it?

Well, yes on a physical, nutritional level.

But perhaps not on a mental level – and that why there is no best diet.

Consider how many foods that are apparently bad for you – can be accommodated by other diets. For example with Weight Watchers you are allowed desserts in moderation. In the Atkins you can eat cheese. Yet people still lose weight on both of those diets.

But there are other differences too. Some diets require no exercise, others moderate and some an aweful lot.

Some require cycling, others running, some walking.

With some you get days off eating healthily, with others you build up “credits” which you can “spend” on treats.

The simple fact of the matter is that we are all different and what appeals to one person may not appeal to others.

The first time I tried the South Beach Diet I lost 7lbs in 7 days – but I disliked the rich food.

In contrast, I loved Body For Life with it’s day off each week to eat whatever I liked.

And so it follows that the best diet – for you – is the one you can follow for a long time. Any diet will work over the short term – like my South Beach experiment.

But for long-lasting wieght loss results you need a diet you can stick to – week after week, month after month.

Because while that sounds depressing – when you actually enjoy the diet sticking to it becomes a pleasure not a pain.

So the key is this – try out a variety of diets yourself. Don’t let others tell you what to do.

Maybe try a week or two of each one to see which you enjoy the most. Which seems “effortless” to you? Because even if you only lose a pound a week but are having the time of your life, it’ll be easier for you to lose weight than if you lost 7lb a week but hated every minute of it!

What is the most amount of weight you have lost, and how?

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

What is the most amount of weight you have lost? How did it happen (through diet/exercise…..diet pills…weight watchers…..personal trainer…….sickness…etc) How long did it take you? And have you kept the weight off?

I’m trying to get motivated and lose weight.

I lost 200 lbs of dead weight last year. I did it by walking out on him.

Seriously though, I’ve lost 60 lbs before on the Atkins diet. Granted after 4 years of the above mentioned dead weight, I gained it all back and then some. I ate junk food and didn’t exercise, so it was my fault.

I’m starting back on it on Monday.

What excercises can make me lost weight and not gain muscle?

well if you like working out with weights, try doing squats, lunges but keep the reps high.15-30. they help you tone them up and not add as much muscle..

How many of you who have been on thyroid medicine have lost weight?

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

I have about 30 lbs to lose, and I have been on thyroid medicine for a few weeks and have lost about 2 lbs. I exercise regularly and try not to eat excessively, (about 1600-1900 calories a day, and I’m moderately active). Has anyone had luck losing weight after being diagnosed with a thyroid condition and starting on medication?

My sister had very good luck. Just have some patience.

Has anyone lost weight pretty quickly and if so how?

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Some of my work collegues are over weight and want/need to lose weight, they more or less try everything there is but just doesnt seem to work. Has anyone ever lose weight in a space of a week and how did they do it. Other then then diet pills or other weight losing medications.

Thank you.

The surest way not to lose weight is to focus on the bathroom scale. I lost 50 pounds and kept it off by moderate exercise and a shift to a pure vegan diet as described by Dr. Dean Ornish in the Spectrum. If you want to lose a lot of weight follow the more extreme version of his diet. It has a lot of vegetables and legumes and whole grains so you feel full and satisfied.

Be cautious about following a pure vegetarian diet however. If you are on a statin drug to lower cholesterol, you may end up with too little cholesterol in your blood and this could affect your brain chemistry. Be aware that you must eat enough B12, D3, and Omega-3. Dr. Barnard recommends supplements for these. You should get some sun on your skin so that is can produce vitamin D on its own. If you are on chemo, beef helps moderate the effect of citotoxins. By all means don’t eat too much beef, pork, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy, or other animal sources of food. These are steeped in cholesterol. They also contribute to heart disease, cancers, osteoporosis, diabetes, and other health issues. You should eat lots of leafy green vegetables for calcium and other nutrients.

A good resource is Dr. Neal Barnard’s book "Fighting the Food Seduction." It show how you can break an addiction to sugars, fats, and salts. Yes, these are clear addictive substances for humans. You should also read about the dangers of aspartame, MSG, and other food additives. Scientists feed MSG to rats in order to fatten them up for studies.

Weight Loss – are You Fighting With yourself to Lose Weight?

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Have you tried to lose weight in the past but failed? You may have been fighting yourself to do it. I’ll explain.

There are two main parts to our mind: the conscious and the subconscious. The conscious part of you wants to lose weight and look good this upcoming season. Meanwhile, the subconscious wants you to continue to eat all the foods that make you feel comfortable and happy. Unfortunately for you, those tend to be composed of sugar and carbohydrates which only make your waist line grow. In a scenario like this one, the person ends up yo-yo-dieting because their “Will Power can only last so long – literally. Will Power only gives you a short burst of energy. Once it’s gone. It’s just gone. The only thing left behind is your emotional stress and frustration which can lead to a vicious cycle of weight rebounding.

That is the reason why the problem of losing weight needs to be tackled at the source of where the mental conflict is – in your subconscious. The subconscious is where all your habits and patterns lie such as not eating healthy, not liking to exercise and drinking only soda. Once you get this part of your mind in sink with your goals, change becomes easy because you’re no longer fighting with yourself.

Hypnosis Has Been Scientifically Proven To Work For Weight Loss.

Setting your mind to lose weight and motivating yourself to enjoy healthy habits is possible with Hypnosis. A significant number of studies (several of which are listed below), have demonstrated that adding hypnosis to a weight loss program significantly increases its success.

A 1996 study conducted at the University of Connecticut published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology found that, on average, people who used Hypnosis were able to lose 2.5 times more weight than a person not using Hypnosis. The authors went a step further by stating, “The correlation analysis indicated that the benefits of Hypnosis increased substantially over time.”

As someone who previously battled with keeping extra pounds off, I know that you need to have the correct frame of mind in order to be successful. You may have experienced occasions when you’ve dieted and exercised but then your will power wore off. In the end, you slipped back to your old patterns and rebounded in weight. This continuous vicious cycle affects you not just physically but emotionally because as your self-esteem spirals downwards you start to overeat; you start eating calorie laden comfort foods again and you get stuck in the same pattern.

This scenario happens to countless of Americans who fuel the diet industry with their purchases of diet pills and other fads in hope of achieving their weight loss goals. The problem, however, is that the more you rebound, the more you set yourself up for failure for the next time you try to diet.

In reality, the perfect equation for most people to lose weight is simple. It’s:

Weight Loss = The Right Mind Set + Healthy Eating + Exercise

That’s it. In life as in science, the simplest answer is often the correct answer.

Hypnosis can help you achieve the right state of mind by “cleaning up the mental clutter” that prevents you from holding a determined course to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. It gives you the ability to naturally chose to eat healthy foods, to want to exercise and to be focused on achieving your weight loss goals. For some, it’s as simple as one session, while others see benefit from a series of sessions.

In a research article titled, Hypnotherapy in weight loss treatment, a group of researchers found that in a test group of 60 participants, those that did not use Hypnosis only lost .5 lbs while the group using Hypnosis lost 17lbs. Why? Because the people who had access to Hypnosis sessions were able to achieve that weight loss combination that eludes most people today.

More proof of the ability of Hypnosis to boost a person’s weight loss was shown in January of 2004, when Dateline aired “Losing it: Dateline ultimate diet challenge.” The show compared some of the most well known methods known to losing weight including the Atkin’s diet, Slim Fast, Weight Watchers, extreme exercise with calorie restrictions, working with a diet coach and Hypnosis.

The top two weight loss techniques that worked were Hypnosis and the Atkins diet. Unfortunately for the man who used the Atkin’s diet (Rick Burns), while he lost weight, he also became sick. “Rick developed a painful case of gout, a condition he’d had before, that he suspected was a result of the diet.” His diet had to be modified.

Marc Merlis, the man who did Hypnosis along with exercising and eating healthy continued to happily lose weight.

“After three months under Hypnosis, his wife had a nickname for him. Incredibly, “droopy drawers” had lost the most so far, a staggering 40 pounds. That’s when droopy’s wife got in on the action. She went to the hypnotist to quit smoking. And guess what? Smoke free, fat free. Five months in, for the Merlis’s things couldn’t be better. And at their son’s bar mitzvah this May, lifting Marc was a piece of cake.”

As long as Marc continued his Hypnosis routine, he was able to continue his path of losing weight. One of the things that I noticed about this weight loss challenge was how much the other contestants suffered by the calorie restrictions that they had to undergo. It’s hard to focus if you feel that you are starving. Hypnosis helps program your mind to think thin – this includes wanting to exercise and wanting to eat healthy so you’re not constantly struggling about what choices you have to make. An added plus to Hypnosis is that it helps you control your stress levels. This in turn helps you to lose weight.

Even highly respected consumer advocate John Stossel of ABC’s 20/20, who is known for debunking fraudulent claims, agrees that Hypnosis is no sham. In his best-selling book, “Myths, Lies and Downright Stupidty”, he makes a bold take on Hypnosis:

“Just when my skeptic’s antennae convince me I always know bunk when I see it, I get fooled. I assumed hypnosis in medicine was one more con game… “Hypnotherapy will help you lose weight!” C’mon, if it worked, there wouldn’t be all those overweight people around. Truth: Hypnosis works — if you let it!”

Smokers can also reap the benefits of Hypnosis for weight loss. A two-fold study stated that both nonsmokers and smokers alike experienced significant weight loss as well as decline in their Body Mass Index compared to the group who did not practice Hypnosis. In fact, the group who used Hypnosis continued to show lower post treatment weights. Non-invasive and relaxing, Hypnosis makes achieving your goals easy.

Hypnosis simply allows you to have better motivation and self control as well as a positive emotional association with your diet and exercise. You don’t just lose weight, you gain control of your own life, so that you can go out there and achieve all the other things that are on your list of goals.

Has anyone ever lost weight by physiologically changing their feelings about hunger?

Friday, February 19th, 2010

What I mean is I know someone who insists he lost a lot of weight by convincing himself that when he felt hungry, it was actually his body burning fat. So over time, he actually enjoyed the feeling of being hungry, and ended up eating a lot less food.

If this possible or is this guy just a freak of nature? If possible, how does one do it?

I guess it is possible but it doesn’t sound healthy if its taken to extremes and you end up starving yourself. Your body will burn more when you eat more otherwise it will go into starvation mode and everything goes to fat. Exercise also helps speed up your metabolism especially when you build muscle.

They have done studies involving visualization that showed effects of people visualizing themselves exercising actually increased weight loss. You could use meditation and visualization too for focusing on eating a better diet.

I lost a lot of weight over time just by listening to how my body felt when I ate food. Noticing that my body felt better while eating good foods and how it felt repulsed when I ate junk food. It helps to focus away from your mind chatter and actually feel your body.

Another thing I changed within myself too was not focusing on eating food as bad. If I did eat something bad I didn’t dwell on it. I didn’t put myself down about it. I think fretting about your weight and dwelling on eating does affect your metabolism and how your body deals with food. By thinking something will make you fat makes you fat.

I hope this helps.
