Is it possible for a persons mindset to psychologically stop them from losing weight if they are on a diet?

I know someone who’s tried unsuccessfully to lose weight for some 20 years and her counselor says it may be that the weight went on as a layer of protection as a direct result of a childhood trauma and that her mind is keeping it on….

Is there any truth to this theory?

Well, that sounds a little out there, BUT mental outlook does affect your weight. Successful dieters will tell you that they weren’t successful until they got the right attitude and a willingness to change behaviors.

You have to really want to lose weight and if you have been overweight a while, you really have to work at it.

No… It’s physics. If you eat less calories than you burn, you WILL lose weight. The energy has to come from somewhere, and that’s your fat.

NO. That is a bunch of bunk. She may have gained the weight as a result of a psychological trauma, but if she is burning more calories than she is taking in, she will lose weight. She may be sabotaging herself when it comes to dieting, losing the weight and exercizing, but if she is being completely honest, and if her counselor is being honest, both will see that she is not doing all she needs to do to lose the weight.

I’ve worked on a psychiatric unit for 33 years and from time to time we have an eating disorders program. That theory is moe than just that-some of our docs claim it’s a definate. After a trauma, I gained weight to try to change my appearance. That was 31 years ago and every time I’ve lost weight, I put it right back on because being attractive can be really scary. I just went through another bout of therapy and hope I’m finally old enough to lose the weight and keep it off. I know-I work on a psychiatric unit and I dont listen to what they teach. My bad.

I think that weight loss is both physical and mental. The person needs to believe they deserve to be healthy and happy in order to manifest the permanent change. They may be scared of losing the protection or whatever benefit the excess weight was providing (barrier, comfort, boundary …)

I recently lost a lot of weight and have struggled with the fear of losing the last 10 pounds, because then the hard part starts about having to maintain — also sometimes it can ve difficult to let go of the security of the old wardrobe that once served its purpose — one needs to transition to clothes that fit and give security so they can let go of the security clothes/blanket so to speak.
It’s all normal, I think, just continue to be encouraging and offer confidence that the person can maintain a healthy new body image. Also, during wight loss sometimes we "temporarily" give up some fun foods, in order to achieve our goal. that doesn’t mean we’ll ‘never’ have that food again, just temporarily.
If someone has painful issues, always/never/forever/should/ … are tough situations and people can’t put a middle time frame in there.
    Hope this helps –
