Does fast weight loss affect the effectiveness of your birth control?

I am on the depo shot and recently had weight loss surgery. The weight loss from the surgery has caused lots of heavy spotting (which has never happened before on the depo shot with me). Is the weight loss counteracting the effectiveness of the shot?
It is possible to lose weight rapidly but you should be realistic and take on board that if you lose weight promptly then you will inevitably place it all back on again just as promptly.
